theory of motivation of a gertsberg: research essence

Hygienic factors are those which hold the person at a certain work, prevent his leaving. What is capable to hold the person in a concrete workplace, according to results of poll of the psychologist?

The motivating component partly satisfies our ego. The person needs public recognition, it is important to it to get feeling of self-esteem. It is recommended to heads to encourage workers with good reviews about the done work (if it is true).

In 1959 Frederik Gertsberg with colleagues developed the two-factor theory of motivation. Project purpose: to reveal conditions with which the worker is happy and also those which introduce dissatisfaction. The psychologist looked for the answer to a question of behavior of the working person - what influences increase in labor productivity?

The theory of motivation of Gertsberg allows to understand better how to interact with the employees and to influence improvement of labor productivity.

The motivation according to Frederik Gertsberg is divided into two factors: hygienic and motivating. Let's allocate three models of motivational behavior of the employee:

If all above-mentioned is observed, the worker will continue cooperation with the company. It will not cause a storm of positive emotions, these conditions are perceived as due. If they are not observed - the employee has a desire to leave the organization.

According to the scientist, the lack of the motivating reasons does not bring to the employee feeling of disappointment (unlike hygienic which absence can provoke departure of the worker from the company).

For many there is surprising a fact that the hygienic motivation of Frederik Gertsberg includes also the salary. Managing directors of the company often stake on salary increase and improvement of working conditions, considering that it is the best motivational occasions. After a while the management sees that such motivation does not work: salary increase caused emotional splash once, and the clean floor at office and the new coffee maker is just pleasant bonus, but not a motivator in any way.

As the motivating reasons also act:

Two hundred people (the engineers working in the sphere of production of paint and varnish coatings) became participants of a research. They received questionnaires in which it was necessary to answer questions of researchers. Participating in poll described situations which were diskomfortna for them in work and vice versa - the fact that the satisfaction from work brought.

It is more powerful forces inducing the employee to give time and energy for the benefit of the concrete organization. Here the attention is focused on the activity, its essence. The person who does favorite thing differs in natural aspiration to the professional growth and development of skills.

Frederik Gertsberg is the American psychologist who specialized in society problems. After he became the eyewitness of Dachau occurring in the concentration camp, it was especially carried away by psychology as the science answering questions of behavioural reactions of the person. The theory of motivation of Gertsberg made him famous for the whole world. In the late sixties of the XX century to year there was a publication on the basis of its researches "Once Again, how You Motivate Employees?" which in 1987 became one of the most duplicated.

The concept "hygiene" strongly settled in consciousness of the person and is closely connected with maintenance of purity of a body. This term came from medicine. In Gertsberg's theory there is no communication with soap and toothbrushes. "Hygiene" is translated from Latin as "prevention".

According to results of a research, the motivational component was divided into two groups of factors: hygienic and motivating (the two-factor theory of motivation).
